Mondora becomes Farmington Hills city manager

Karen Mondora is now the official city manager for Farmington Hills.

Mondora has held the acting position since Gary Mekjian resigned earlier this year. She began working for the city in the Department of Public Services and moved into the assistant city manager role in 2023. That promotion made her the first woman to hold that specific title in the city's history.

At the October 26 council meeting, members voted 6-0 to appoint her to the top administrative post. Councilman Michael Bridges was absent for the vote. Mondora is the eighth person to serve as city manager in Farmington Hills. Her predecessors include George Majoros, Lawrence Savage, William Costick, Daniel Hobbs, Steve Brock, and Dave Boyer.

The new city manager will supervise nearly 1,000 employees and manage a budget of more than $85 million. She will oversee daily operations for a population of nearly 85,000 residents. Her immediate priorities include the transformation of the Grand River corridor, updates to strategic and master plans, and the expansion of public art and community spaces.

Mayor Theresa Rich said Mondora has been an exceptional asset since joining the city. Rich noted that Mondora's experience leading diverse teams will help the city focus on service excellence and long-term initiatives.

Mondora stated that she is honored to serve the community. She said she looks forward to partnering with the council, staff, and local businesses to build upon the city's successes.
