Iara Dossantos Bomfim, 29, pleaded not guilty to 10 felony counts of child abuse on Wednesday. Orange County prosecutors say video footage captured her repeatedly striking a young infant over several weeks.
The baby's mother discovered the abuse on July 11, 2026, after hearing her three-month-old son scream. She checked the family's nanny cam and saw Bomfim sitting on a yoga ball. The recording shows the woman violently bouncing the child so his head and neck moved back and forth and side to side.
According to the District Attorney's Office, the video also shows Bomfim punching the baby in the back of the head with a closed fist. Prosecutors state the alleged abuse began on June 17, when the infant was 2 months and 10 days old. The incidents continued until the child was just over 3 months old.
Bomfim fled to Brazil in July after the discovery. She returned to the United States and was arrested on Friday while attempting to create a new profile on Care.com to advertise her services.
She is currently being held on $500,000 bail. If convicted on all 10 counts, she faces a maximum sentence of 18 years in state prison.
