Ten downtown blocks in Corpus Christi will close to traffic this Saturday for the nineteenth annual Día de los Muertos Street Festival. The event serves as the central attraction for a weekend filled with cultural observances and Halloween gatherings across the Coastal Bend region.
The festival operates on a free admission basis and will run from 1 p.m. until midnight. Organizers have planned a lineup that includes live musical performances, visual art displays, food vendors, and cultural demonstrations. A significant portion of the event is dedicated to a community ofrenda, which is a traditional altar. This installation provides a specific space for families to pay tribute to relatives who have passed away. The holiday itself is defined by the act of remembering these individuals and celebrating the lives they lived.
Several other major events are scheduled for the same two days. The Villain Invasion Halloween Fest will occupy the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina on both Saturday and Sunday. This gathering focuses on horror themes and allows attendees to meet actors from popular horror films. Participants can also enter costume competitions and join gaming tournaments. The event has a charitable component, as visitors who bring two nonperishable food items for the Coastal Bend Food Bank will receive a special-edition poster while supplies last. Weekend passes are priced starting at $20, with free entry for children aged 12 and younger.
On the morning of Saturday, the Monster Mash Cupcake Dash will take place at Water's Edge Park. This running event offers three distances for participants: a 5K run, a 10K run, and a 2-mile walk. Dressing up is encouraged for all participants. Every person who finishes the course will be given a cupcake. The funds raised from the event support Family Counseling Services, an organization that provides mental health care throughout the Coastal Bend area.
For those seeking a more relaxed activity, Asbury Methodist Church is hosting a family pumpkin painting session on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Families can purchase and select a pumpkin at the church and then decorate it together. The church's pumpkin patch will remain open for visitors until Halloween.
A new addition to the schedule is also launching this Saturday. Hocus Pocus Corpus will be held at the Hilliard Center from noon to 3 p.m. This free event offers a variety of Halloween activities, including trick-or-treating and door prizes. It also features a community resource fair and a specific presentation focused on renters' rights.
