Five people were hospitalized after two separate shootings occurred near the Michigan State University campus on Halloween night.
East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown announced the injuries at a press conference on Sunday afternoon. Her department responded to four distinct incidents during that night, with the two shootings resulting in the total of five gunshot victims.
The first call came near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. Officers found three people with gunshot wounds in that area. Two of those victims were listed in stable condition, though the status of the third was not immediately clear.
Later that same night, police addressed a second shooting in the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Two additional people were shot there and are currently in stable condition. Brown said officers recovered several guns from the scene, though it remained unclear if those specific weapons were used to fire the shots.
Brown stated that several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence. Police have not determined if the two shootings are linked, and it is not known if any of the victims are MSU students.
An MSU spokesperson noted that the Department of Police and Public Safety assisted East Lansing Police. The university clarified that the criminal activity did not involve a direct threat to the campus and did not occur on university property. The East Lansing Fire Department reported handling 91 total incidents over a 24-hour period, including 75 during Halloween night.
