Los Angeles Lakers guard Ja Morant will contest the technical foul he received for flopping during Tuesday's game against the Portland Trail Blazers. The penalty occurred in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter, when Portland led 121-120. Morant believes the fine is approximately $2,000.
The call was one of three flopping penalties issued in the final six minutes of the contest. Portland forward Toumani Camara and Lakers forward Ziaire Williams also received technicals during that stretch. The teams combined for 71 free throws in the game, a volume that drew attention from players and coaches.
Morant argued that his reaction to contact did not warrant the foul. He stated that he took a bump to the chest while guarding Austin Reaves, raised his arms, and moved backward while remaining on his feet. He described his movement as a natural response to the impact rather than a deliberate fall.
Trail Blazers coach Micah Nori questioned the frequency of such calls. He noted that there were only 27 flopping technicals across 2,000 games last season. Nori also pointed out that the game ended near 2 a.m. Eastern Time, contributing to the length of the contest.
Portland's defensive strategy adjusted in response to the officiating. Morant explained that his teammates focused on keeping their hands visible and absorbing contact through the chest to show the offensive player initiated the play. He credited the team with maintaining its energy after the technical to secure the 136-129 victory.
Lakers star Damian Lillard, who scored 21 points, described the officials as forcing the technicals. He acknowledged that players exaggerate contact but argued that a significant flop should be required for a call when the game is still close. Lillard noted that the repeated calls surprised him during a back-and-forth finish.
Morant scored a season-high 23 points in the loss. The appeal process will determine whether the $2,000 fine stands. The technicals contributed to the high number of free throws and the extended duration of the game.
