A driver firing from a moving vehicle killed one person and injured five others in the Paris suburb of Trappes on Friday morning.

The incident occurred against a backdrop of rising civil unrest. France has been dealing with mass protests over the cost of living and weekly overnight curfews. Students, labor union members, and Yellow Vest activists were scheduled to demonstrate again on Saturday, adding pressure to local security forces.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. local time, the suspect began firing in bursts from his vehicle. A police source told Agence France-Presse that the gunman targeted passersby at three different locations, including a playground. Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh said the driver moved through Trappes and the neighboring town of La Verriere, aiming to cause a bloodbath. The attack ended after just under 15 minutes when five officers from the anti-crime brigade stopped the vehicle. The suspect was arrested in the nearby town of Coignieres.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated the weapon appeared to be military-grade or at least automatic. Officials initially reported four wounded, but Rabeh later corrected the number to five. Three of those injured are in critical condition. The mayor of La Verriere, Nicolas Dainville, confirmed that a 12-year-old girl was shot eight times and remains in stable condition. Rabeh identified the fatality as a person of African origin and noted one critically wounded victim is of North African origin.

President Emmanuel Macron visited the scene and met with residents. He described the incident as a racist terror attack, noting that the suspect’s statements indicated premeditation. Macron said the victims were targeted based on skin color or perceived religion. The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation for murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. Three additional individuals from the suspect's family and friend circle were placed in police custody Friday evening and overnight. The suspect has four prior convictions that have been legally expunged.

Security measures are being tightened for the upcoming weekend. Nuñez said approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed. This force includes elite units, helicopters, armored vehicles, and water cannons. The minister promised an uncompromising response to any violence or vandalism during the demonstrations.

Cultural institutions are adjusting their schedules. The Louvre and other major Paris museums will close their doors. Art Basel Paris canceled its weekend program due to safety concerns. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated on social media that all resources of the security forces and judiciary are fully mobilized.
