Jesper Wallstedt stopped 26 shots on Sunday, Nov. 1, to lead the Minnesota Wild to a 5-1 victory over the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena. The win improved Wallstedt's record to 9-2-3 and extended the Wild's road winning streak to four games.
Three factors defined the performance for the visitors. First, Quinn Hughes and Michael McCarron scored within 1:45 of each other to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead after the first period. Second, Wallstedt handled a surge of shots from Washington in the middle frame, preventing the Capitals from cutting the deficit further. Third, Kirill Kaprizov scored an empty-netter, which marked his 15th goal of the season and the 500th point of his career.
The Wild faced pressure in the second period, with the Capitals outshooting them and keeping the goalie busy. A deflected shot slipped past Wallstedt with less than five seconds remaining before the intermission, giving Washington one goal. However, the Wild added two insurance goals on late power plays through Maxim Shabanov and Danila Yurov to seal the result.
Coach John Hynes noted the physical nature of the opponent during a postgame press conference. "Washington had some pushes and surges in the game and they had some good looks," Hynes said. He added that the team is big, strong, and effective around the net, requiring big saves from the goalie.
Wallstedt has been a consistent factor for Minnesota this season, playing in all but two games. Last year, when the Wild struggled early, he posted a 6-0-0 record with three shutouts during a similar stretch. This season, the team has found better balance, as evidenced by the current four-game road win streak.
Logan Thompson finished with 24 saves for Washington. The Capitals will make their only trip to St. Paul this season on March 7. Minnesota is scheduled to face the Philadelphia Flyers on Election Night.
