Brennan and Harlan will decide the District 29-6A championship on Friday night at Farris Stadium.
Both programs enter the Week 11 matchup with perfect 7-0 records in district play, creating a winner-take-all scenario in the final week of the UIL regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Brennan has dominated its district schedule, averaging 60 points per game while allowing only three total touchdowns against those opponents. The Bears' sole loss occurred in Week 1, an overtime defeat to Vandegrift that the team views as a sharpening experience for the remainder of the season.
Head coach Stephen Basore acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming contest while expressing a preference for lopsided victories. "It's exciting," Basore said. "It's funny because I talk to media guys and they're like, 'Man, I'm hoping for a really close game,' and I'm like, 'Yeah, those are fun games for y'all, but as coaches I like it when we're up by a lot and we can relax a little.' But something tells me this one's going to be a nail-biter."
Brennan players credit the balance between their high-scoring offense and stout defense for their success. Senior running back Jaycen Pullins noted that the defensive line holds opponents to low scores, which allows the offense to shine. "It's really good to be on this offense with these type of numbers," Pullins said. "We also have a good defense. They hold off teams from scoring a lot of points. They make our scorers look really good."
Junior cornerback Myles Oliver emphasized that preparation is the primary factor in maintaining their undefeated district record. "We take no days off because they all could lead to a mess-up in the game," Oliver said. "We like to come out here, do everything we can: study film, go through the motions correctly."
Harlan enters the game as the reigning district champion, having defeated Brennan in the previous season. Head coach Matthew McKinney noted that the title has effectively been decided between these two programs for the last six or seven years. "Having this game at Week 11, the final regular season game, is going to be really exciting for not just Brennan and Harlan, but for all of San Antonio," McKinney said.
Harlan players believe execution will be the deciding factor in a match between two comparable teams. Junior wide receiver Jordan Sneed stated that both squads will attempt to implement their game plans. "I know we're both good teams," Sneed said. "I think we can both, our team, can go out there and do our thing. And they're going to go out there and do their thing. But I just think whoever executes more is going to go out there and get the win."
Senior defensive end Conner Stevens viewed the matchup as a critical test before the postseason begins. "It's going to be great," Stevens said. "I think it's going to be a great environment, a great challenge for us, especially that following week we're heading to playoffs. We need to get this one done."
KSAT 12 will provide extended coverage of the game on the Nightbeat and through a stream at 10:35 p.m. on KSAT Plus and KSAT.com.
