Liverpool’s expensive forward line failed to produce a single shot on target against Arsenal on Sunday, marking a historic defensive performance by the visitors.

Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory at Anfield, their first win at the ground in over 14 years. The result extended Liverpool’s home goal drought, as the hosts have scored just four Premier League goals in their first five matches this season.

The match highlighted a stark contrast in attacking output for the Reds. While they managed 28 touches in the Arsenal penalty area in the first half, a record for an opening period against the Gunners, they failed to convert pressure into goals. Kai Havertz scored the only goal in the 16th minute, capping a dominant defensive effort by Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta praised his team’s commitment in the post-match press conference. He noted that Liverpool often shoots in tight margins, making the lack of shots on target statistically remarkable. Arteta emphasized that every player maintained consistent defensive actions to deny the hosts space.

The underperformance is part of a wider trend for Liverpool’s high-value attack. The club spent a combined £354 million to sign Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola, and Florian Wirtz over the last three transfer windows. Adding Cody Gakpo’s £37 million fee from 2023, the first-choice attacking quartet costs more than $500 million.

Despite individual form earlier in the season, none of the key forwards found their rhythm on Sunday. Isak, who had scored in three consecutive games prior to the weekend, completed only 12 of 16 passes. Wirtz was substituted while his team chased an equalizer, finishing with an expected assists value of 0.06.

Manager Andoni Iraola faces statistical challenges compared to the previous campaign. Liverpool have scored 11 goals in nine top-flight games, trailing newly promoted Ipswich Town by two goals. The team also ranks 19th in the league for big chances created, with just seven opportunities, compared to 24 in the same period last season.

Iraola attributes the domestic struggles to the physical nature of the Premier League compared to European competition. Liverpool have scored 12 goals in three Champions League matches this season. He noted that the opposition in Europe often differs in style, allowing his side to play more comfortably.

Midfield adjustments are underway to support the attack. Teenager Trey Nyoni made his first league start against Arsenal, completing 53 passes and 14 line-breaking passes in 59 minutes. Iraola is also evaluating his full-back options, with Milos Kerkez showing energy but inconsistency, while loanee Ronald Araújo provides defensive stability but limited offensive threat.

Dominik Szoboszlai acknowledged the inconsistency of the squad after the match. He stated that it takes time to reach the top level. Liverpool will look for a return to form in their next fixture, hoping to translate their European scoring record into domestic results.
