Manchester United defeated Roma 3-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday night, a result that capped a chaotic evening at Old Trafford. The victory came after supporters executed a preplanned protest against the club's ownership structure. The demonstration targeted the 21st minute of the first half, a time chosen to mark 21 years of control by the Glazer family. Green and gold balloons fell onto the pitch, and a small number of tennis balls were thrown from the Stretford End. Players cleared the debris, causing a brief stoppage, but the disruption was limited compared to a similar protest by Celtic fans last year.
The match began poorly for the home side. Matías Soulè gave Roma the lead in the 11th minute. Donyell Malen converted a penalty seven minutes later to make the score 2-0. United was trailing 2-0 inside the 18th minute, continuing a difficult season. Bruno Fernandes restored some balance with a penalty of his own. Matheus Cunha then scored twice in the second half to complete the comeback. This marked the first time United had recovered from a two-goal deficit in the competition since October 2021.
Cunha received a booking for his celebration after the second goal. The win was the third of the campaign for the team. It also ended a nine-game winless streak and a run of three consecutive losses. The result provides a financial and reputational boost for a club currently sitting 17th in the Premier League.
Manager Michael Carrick downplayed the impact of the win. He stated, "I'm not getting too carried away with things." Carrick emphasized the need to prepare for upcoming fixtures. When asked about his reaction to the final whistle, he said, "Genuinely, no," regarding feeling relief. He expressed pleasure for the players and felt responsible for the occasion.
The Glazer family has owned the club since 2005. Their leveraged buyout remains a point of contention among supporters. Jim Ratcliffe, the head of INEOS, also faces criticism. He purchased a 25% stake for $1.3 billion in 2024 and now oversees soccer operations. Ticket prices have risen under his watch. The club has dismissed two managers during this period.
United faces Aston Villa on Nov. 8 before the international break. The team's position in the league table remains precarious despite the European victory.
