The Crusaders announced their 27-man squad for the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season on Wednesday. The announcement took place at One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch. The roster includes 15 players signing their first full contracts with the club.
Two young supporters, Ava Lyall and Zara Lamperd, participated in the event. The club selected them from public nominations based on their strong connections to the team. Both children named a player on stage during the presentation.
Crusaders chief executive Colin Mansbridge said the event was designed to engage the local community. “It’s about getting excited … people love the team and love to be involved,” Mansbridge said. He noted that the passion fans show for the team is a key part of the club's identity.
Ava Lyall is nine years old. Her mother, Tracey Lyall, said Ava was diagnosed with bone cancer at that age. Ava has undergone chemotherapy and long hospital stays. She also had a leg amputation. Tracey Lyall described her daughter as a young girl who has shown immense courage and strength. Ava now plays wheelchair basketball and was named Most Valuable Player at the recent Halberg Games.
Zara Lamperd first played rugby at age six in a match at Apollo Projects Stadium. Her father, James Lamperd, recalled that she suffered a collision that left her injured and missing two front teeth. He said the care provided by the Crusaders support crew turned a frightening experience into a positive memory for his daughter. “They made her feel safe, brave, valued, and maybe part of something bigger than herself,” Lamperd said.
The 2027 squad lists Codie Taylor, Liam Jack, and Richie Mo’unga among the selected players. Clément Castets is included as a replacement for Tamaiti Williams. Castets will remain with the club until Williams is fit to play. The list identifies players with an asterisk as those earning their first full Crusaders contract.
The team will compete in the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season. The squad includes forwards, halfbacks, and backs across all positions. The announcement marks the start of the pre-season period for the franchise.
