Homeowners in Hawaii are dealing with a wave of late-night door kicks. The activity follows a social media trend where teenagers run up to residential front doors, deliver a hard blow to simulate a break-in, and then flee. Local authorities describe the behavior as high-impact and disruptive.

Residents say the trend has become consistent in their neighborhoods over the last several months. Surveillance cameras have captured the incidents, which typically occur in the middle of the night. The noise and physical force have left many families feeling unsafe in their own homes.

Matt, a homeowner in Maui Lani, said he heard violent pounding on his door at 1:30 a.m. He asked that his full name not be disclosed due to fears of retaliation. He said he spent nearly $14,000 repairing the damage and adding safeguards to his property. He has filed multiple police reports and contacted his homeowners association.

Mae, a resident of Ewa Beach, described a similar experience. She heard her front door kicked about five times around 9 p.m. She said the force was strong enough to shake the entire house. “It literally was so powerful that it shook the whole house and it felt like somebody was trying to break down the door,” Mae said. “I was terrified.”

Mae noted that the trend is also affecting neighbors in her area. She said another resident nearby experienced forceful kicking. She urged parents to talk to their children about respecting neighbors and their property. “Times are hard. It is expensive to fix things and it’s very disrespectful,” she said.

Matt expressed a mixed view on the teenagers involved. He said he wants justice but recognizes they are young. “In the same breath, I have a heart, and if you strip all of this away from the individual, they’re really just kids .. I’m not sure if this is a cry for help,” he said. He is currently asking his community for help identifying the individuals responsible.

Both residents are speaking out to raise awareness. They hope that visibility will lead to better identification of the participants and fewer incidents in the coming weeks. The local police have not released a specific number of reported cases for the area.
