Janelle Monáe has unveiled a new visual identity for her upcoming Halloween celebration. For the 2026 edition of her Wondaween Festival, the artist appears as a creature with green-tinged prosthetic skin. The look features a wrinkled face, one eye replaced by a hot pink swirl, and prosthetic hands with bloody knuckles. She wears a peachy pink shag wig, a black hat, and a ruffled white blouse paired with black-and-white striped suspenders.
The festival is titled Creature Carnival and will take place on Oct. 29 at a secret location in Los Angeles. Bacardi has returned as the official spirits partner for the second year. The brand is promoting the Spookito, a seasonal cocktail that serves as the drink of the season. The recipe combines Bacardi Superior rum, lime juice, simple syrup, grenadine, mint leaves, and soda water.
Monáe views Halloween as a period of creative freedom. She has described the holiday as a happy space that allows her to explore imagination and joy. "I’m just doing what I want to see more of .. I do this because my heart needs it," she told The Hollywood Reporter. This philosophy drives her commitment to embodying characters fully from morning until night.
Her Halloween tradition dates back to her childhood in Kansas City. She once dressed as Chucky from the movie franchise, wearing the mask and overalls for the entire day. She even slept while wearing the mask. Her mother reacted with a mix of concern and affection, saying, "I think something’s wrong with you, but I love you."
The planning process for her adult costumes often begins years in advance. Monáe stated that her E.T. costume from 2024 took two years to complete. She works with designer and tailor Alex Navarro and stylist Alexandra Mandelkorn to bring her visions to life. In 2025, she appeared as the Cat in the Hat on The Jennifer Hudson Show, remaining in character throughout the interview.
The artist treats each costume as a total transformation. "When I get into costume, I transform," she told the Los Angeles Times. She explained that whether she is a white rabbit or a character from a film, she commits to the role for the entire day. This approach aligns with her role as a world-builder in music and acting.
The Creature Carnival marks the latest entry in her Wondaween series. Previous iterations have included a vampire look at Santa Monica Pier and a Frankenstein-inspired outfit for a film premiere. The 2026 event continues this pattern of elaborate, character-driven presentations.
The festival will feature the creature look as its centerpiece. Monáe will hold the Spookito in one of her prosthetic hands during the event. The gathering serves as both a party and a showcase for her seasonal aesthetic.
