Lamar Jackson is out of the 2026 NFL season with a right thumb injury. The Baltimore Ravens announced on Sunday that the quarterback will undergo surgery and has been placed on injured reserve. The injury occurred on the first snap of the game against the Buffalo Bills.

Jackson missed the previous three games with an ankle injury. This marks the second major injury he has sustained in the current campaign. His departure left the Ravens without their primary option at quarterback for the remainder of the contest.

The loss compounds an issue for Baltimore's depth chart. Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley also left the game in the second quarter. He suffered a right toe injury. The Ravens now face the possibility of starting undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano in the fourth quarter.

Baltimore's offense struggled throughout the matchup. The team recorded 68 net passing yards. That total is the lowest for the franchise since 2017. The Ravens entered the season with the second-best odds to win the Super Bowl. They currently hold the last place in the AFC North with a 4-4 record.

The injury came against a Buffalo defense that dominated the game. Edge rusher Greg Rousseau recorded a sack, three quarterback hits, and two pass breakups. Nine different Bills players logged a sack or a quarterback hit. The pressure forced turnovers and disrupted the Ravens' rhythm.

The Bills also limited the production of Ravens star receiver Zay Flowers. Flowers recorded zero catches on the day. This is the first time in his career he has finished a game without a reception. The team had allowed Puka Nacua of the Rams to catch 17 passes just two games prior.

Coach Jesse Minter confirmed the details of the injury after the final whistle. He stated that Jackson requires surgery. The Ravens face a difficult short week before their next game. They play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.

The Bills' offensive coordinator noted the reliance on Josh Allen for success. He said, 'When you have Josh Allen, you're never going to get what you gameplanned for.' The team adjusted its strategy in the second half to maximize their advantage.
