A formal inquiry into the alleged possession of child sexual abuse materials by Thomas Markle has created a complex dynamic between his daughter, the Duchess of Sussex, and the Philippine justice system. Meghan stated on Friday that she is deeply distressed by the news. Her statement highlights a timeline that suggests she has been aware of the situation for nearly eight years, even as the legal proceedings only now become public knowledge.
In a written message, Meghan explained that a letter containing troubling allegations about her father was sent to U.K. authorities in 2018. The document was forwarded to the Metropolitan Police and the Royalty and Specialist Protection command before being shared with her. She noted that she received assurances at the time that these concerns were being actively investigated. However, the Metropolitan Police has indicated that it has not conducted a formal investigation into Thomas Markle and is not doing so currently.
A spokesperson for the Met confirmed the force is aware of media reports regarding its officers helping to pass on the 2018 letter. The department is currently undertaking internal enquiries to confirm the details of that communication. This internal review adds a layer of scrutiny to the U.K. side of the story while the Philippines moves forward with its own process.
The investigation in the Philippines was triggered by a report from Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother. According to recent media accounts, he discovered child abuse materials in storage boxes at the family home in Cebu province. He reportedly made the discovery while his father was in the United States receiving treatment for a stroke and blood clot. The younger Markle allegedly first saw the materials after turning on an old cell phone at the residence.
Thomas Markle Jr. is said to have reported his findings in July to the FBI hotline, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and state police in Pennsylvania. His father has denied the claims, describing them as sick lies and asserting that he has never downloaded such material in his life. The denial was published in a British tabloid on Friday.
Meghan used her statement to address the ongoing distance between her and her father. She clarified that her decision to limit contact was made to protect her children from the media distortions that have surrounded the family for years. She expressed hope that this explanation will finally clarify the reasoning behind their estrangement.
Philippine state media confirmed on Friday that the Department of Justice is looking into the matter. A justice official stated that the department’s anti-trafficking task force is handling the case and confirmed that Thomas Markle Sr. is the subject. Meghan concluded her remarks by stating her sincerest hope is that justice is fully served and that the safety of innocent children remains the primary focus.
