Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano will remain out of custody while he awaits trial. A judge in Prince William County Circuit Court set his bond early Monday morning. The 27-year-old faces three felony charges stemming from the damage to a World War II memorial near Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. His next court date has not yet been set but is expected to be scheduled soon.

Prince William County Police responded to the site at 10:13 p.m. on Oct. 21. Officers found Maldonado Soriano striking the 9-foot limestone statue with a sledgehammer. The sculpture depicts the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi during the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima. Authorities confirmed the head of one Marine figure was completely removed. Other figures in the group were also damaged. Police estimated repair costs in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Maldonado Soriano is charged with felony destruction of property, trespass with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument. Federal sources told Fox News he crossed into the United States illegally in December 1999. He received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status in 2014 under the Obama administration. That status was extended in 2024 under the Biden administration but expired in August 2026 after it was not renewed under the Trump administration.

The monument was sculpted by Felix de Weldon. De Weldon also created the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. The stone structure stands near the base and serves as a tribute to the battle.
