The Kehlsteinhaus, a mountain structure on the Obersalzberg peak in Bavaria, was destroyed by fire on Friday night. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann confirmed in Berchtesgaden that the state will reconstruct the site.

Emergency services received a call at 9:15 p.m. local time. Police stated that the building was completely engulfed in flames when crews arrived. No injuries were reported, and no one was found inside. Authorities cited local conditions as a factor that delayed the arrival of fire trucks at the summit.

Police identified a suspect shortly after the blaze started. Prosecutors named the individual as a 33-year-old German citizen with ties to the Berchtesgaden area. He does not currently live in the region. Officials said the man showed signs of mental illness and was ordered to a psychiatric facility. Investigators are also reviewing whether a political motive played a role, given the building's history. Police said there is no indication that others were involved.

The structure sits at an elevation of 6,017 feet. It was completed in 1938 and served as a temporary seat of government for Adolf Hitler. The building survived Allied bombing during World War II, which preserved its original state. It has operated as a tourist destination and restaurant since the war. The site's website describes it as one of the few undamaged monuments from the Hitler era.

Herrmann said the future appearance of the site will be determined through discussions with local officials, historians, and preservationists. He told reporters, "We're not going to leave a ruin there." He added, "I think we will be able to find a sensible solution." Herrmann also emphasized the need to continue the work of remembrance.
