A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire died in Bimini after a strong ocean current pulled her two sons from a snorkeling site. Police say she followed them into the water to save them and was carried away in the process. The boys were later pulled from the sea and are safe.

The incident occurred near the southern point of the island. The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation into the sudden death on Tuesday. Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. By the time they arrived, the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for treatment.

A local doctor pronounced her dead at the clinic despite attempts to revive her. The force stated that the woman was rescued from the water and taken to the ferry dock, where CPR was administered. Police do not suspect foul play. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

The Foreign Office said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family. A spokesperson offered thoughts for the family of the British woman who died in the Bahamas.

The investigation remains open as forensic work proceeds. The family is now in the country to handle matters with local police.
