A 36-year-old British woman died in North Bimini on Tuesday after a strong current separated her from her two sons during a snorkeling trip.

Royal Bahamas police said the incident occurred near the southern point of the island. The woman was in the water with her husband and their two children when the current swept the boys away. As she attempted to reach them, the force stated, "the woman was also swept away." Both children were subsequently pulled from the water safely.

Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. By the time police arrived on the scene, she had already been transported to a local clinic. Medical staff administered CPR at the dock before her transfer. A doctor at the clinic pronounced her dead despite resuscitation efforts.

The police force issued a preliminary account of the tragedy via social media. The statement noted that foul play is not suspected at this time. Investigators will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is monitoring the situation. A spokesperson said, "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas." Officials are currently in contact with local authorities to provide support to the family.

North Bimini is part of a small island group located between Andros and Miami. It is the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The islands are known for their proximity to America and for hosting a shark research center. They were also once home to author Ernest Hemingway.
