North Texas Congressman Keith Self is continuing his campaign for a third term after federal agents arrested a 17-year-old from McKinney. The teen is accused of plotting to assassinate the Republican lawmaker. Campaign officials confirmed the details of the incident to local news outlets earlier this week. The arrest was made by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on October 5. Self's team learned of the detention through U.S. Capitol Police the following day, on October 6. The congressman is currently running to represent Texas' third congressional district.

Investigators believe the teenager had been radicalized and was under federal monitoring. Officials told the campaign that the suspect was planning a terrorist attack in the name of ISIS. The specific target was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was set to include former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for further information but had not responded as of this report.

Rep. Self stated that his team increased their security measures upon learning of the threat. He noted that he already had a robust security detail in place but became more vigilant. Self explained that he adjusted his situational awareness to ensure the safety of his staff and himself. He emphasized that the response was calculated rather than panicked.

Drawing on his military background, Self described his reaction as calm. He has deployed to combat zones multiple times in the past. This experience helped him process the news without excessive alarm. He noted that individuals without such experience often react with shock when told someone is plotting to kill them. Self and his team focused on determining if the suspect was acting alone. They took the threat seriously but viewed it through the lens of professional preparedness.

Self's wife, who has served as a military spouse for 25 years, also understood the risks involved. She has supported his deployments in the past and is taking the current situation seriously as well. Self mentioned that while he has received threats before, this was the first time one resulted in an arrest. He acknowledged the seriousness of the incident, noting that it could have been a major event based on the information provided to his team.

Despite the alleged plot, Self attended the chili cook-off as planned on October 17. He judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans at the event. He described the day as delightful and reported that nothing happened. The appearance was part of his ongoing effort to stay visible to voters. He has continued his regular campaigning schedule, including poll greeting this morning. He stated that the incident will not deter him from alerting the public to his political views.

The arrest occurs at a time when Self has taken a prominent stance against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing the practice. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land. It opposes the implementation of Sharia law in the United States. This legislative move has placed him in the spotlight regarding religious and legal debates in the region.

McKinney, where the suspect resides, is part of Self's congressional district. The area has seen considerable attention regarding plans for a new mosque. In August, the McKinney City Council unanimously approved a site plan for expansion at a local mosque. The council stated that the plans complied with city development rules. The vote followed hours of contentious public comment. It was later followed by an effort to recall several council members. These local issues may intersect with the broader political dynamics of the district.

Evan Hunt, Self's opponent in the upcoming midterm election, condemned the alleged assassination plot. He shared his thoughts on the matter in a post on social media. The identity of the 17-year-old has not been publicly released. The investigation into the plot is still ongoing. Self and his team continue to monitor the situation while maintaining their campaign activities across the district.
