Ukraine confirms full satellite internet speeds restored
President Zelenskyy stated that Starlink and Starshield systems are now operating at pre-disruption speeds, a move critical for military logistics and drone defense.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Friday that the speed restrictions on the Starlink and Starshield satellite systems have been fully lifted. In a video address to the nation, the president confirmed that the systems were functioning normally by the morning of October 24. He extended his thanks to the various parties who assisted in restoring Ukraine's communication capabilities to their previous levels.
Zelenskyy stated that the systems are now operating at the same speeds they possessed before the limitations were introduced. He emphasized that the country now has the bandwidth required for its current needs. The president noted that speeds began to recover overnight and reached the necessary threshold for military operations by early morning hours. He described this development as highly significant for the war effort.
The restoration of full speed is viewed as crucial for two main areas of the conflict. First, it supports logistics along the front lines. Second, it is essential for protecting Ukraine from jet-powered Shahed drones. These drones rely on fast data transmission to navigate and strike, making stable and high-speed satellite connections a vital defensive tool for Ukrainian forces.
Military officials had begun monitoring the recovery before the president's public statement. Experts from the Ministry of Defence and the country's defence forces recorded both satellite systems operating at speeds exceeding 161 km/h. Following these initial readings, the Ministry of Defence issued an official confirmation. They reported that speeds had climbed above 400 km/h and that the connection was stable across the network.
The announcement follows a period of significant disruption that affected several sectors along the line of contact. A few days prior, Zelenskyy reported that the equipment was limited to speeds between 130 and 161 km/h. He explained that these lower speeds interfered with supply chains and restricted the effective use of drones by Ukrainian troops. The drop in performance had raised concerns about the sustainability of certain defensive operations.
The issue also sparked political discussion regarding the role of the United States. On October 16, US President Donald Trump stated that the White House was not involved in limiting Ukraine's use of the satellite systems. This comment came amid broader questions about the origins of the bandwidth restrictions. The timing of the fix coincides with these political clarifications, suggesting a resolution to the technical and diplomatic hurdles faced by the Ukrainian military.
Reports from The Telegraph indicated that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk had discussed the idea of restricting bandwidth with President Trump. This information provides context for the earlier limitations. With the speeds now fully restored, the immediate technical challenge has been resolved. The focus now shifts to how this renewed connectivity will impact the ongoing military campaigns and the management of drone warfare in the coming weeks.
