The Tampa Bay Rays are down 3-0 in the World Series after the Milwaukee Brewers scored eight runs with two outs in the fourth inning on Monday night. The Brewers routed the Rays 10-1 at Tropicana Field, becoming the first team in World Series history to record such a high number of runs with two out in a single inning.

The offensive explosion began with a defensive mishap. Taylor Walls attempted to field a sharp grounder from Brice Turang, but the ball glanced off his glove and rolled into short center field. Turang scored on the error, and the Brewers followed with hits from Garrett Mitchell and Cooper Pratt to extend their lead from 2-0 to 7-0.

Milwaukee capitalized on the momentum, scoring eight runs during a 17-pitch span. Jackson Chourio contributed two hits in the inning, part of a four-hit performance. The team finished the game with a 10-1 victory, taking a commanding lead in the best-of-seven matchup.

Tampa Bay starter Freddy Peralta gave up the first four of the inning's runs. Relievers Cam Booser and Cole Sulser were pulled from the game after allowing the final four runs. Booser described the feeling in the clubhouse as letting his team down.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said the team must use the 3-0 deficit as motivation. He noted that the team has a chance to compete and must win Game 4 on Tuesday. Cash adopted a mentality of using the current situation as fuel for a rebound.

Prior to Monday's game, the highest number of runs scored with two outs in a World Series inning was seven. The Boston Red Sox set that mark in the 2007 opener against Colorado. The Los Angeles Dodgers previously scored eight runs with two outs in the 2020 National League Championship Series against Atlanta.

Of the 25 teams in World Series history that have fallen behind 3-0, 21 were swept and four lost in five games. The only team to trail 3-0 in a best-of-seven postseason series and still win was the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees.

Rays pitcher Griffin Jax starts Game 4 on Tuesday. He said the team will attempt to rest and prepare to fight back despite the heavy loss on Monday night.
