The financial and reputational stakes have risen sharply around the Markle family after new details emerged concerning digital files.
The timeline of events suggests a slow burn that has finally reached a public flashpoint. In 2018, shortly after the royal wedding, the Metropolitan Police’s Royalty and Specialist Protection unit shared a letter with the Duchess. That correspondence contained troubling allegations about Thomas Markle Sr. At the time, she remained silent to avoid jeopardizing potential investigations or facing legal exposure. Now, in late 2026, that history has resurfaced alongside fresh claims from her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr. He told detectives in the Philippines that he discovered hundreds or thousands of images on devices stored in boxes at a home in Cebu. Markle Sr, who lived in that location until returning to the United States in May, denies these accusations are true.
The Duchess issued a statement through a spokesperson following reports from The Sun. She described herself as deeply distressed by the claims. Her remarks focused on the protective nature of her distance from her father. She stated that keeping her children away from him served a single purpose: their safety. She expressed hope that justice would be fully served and that child safety would remain the primary focus for investigators.
Markle Sr is currently recovering in a rehabilitation center in Florida. He is learning to walk with a prosthetic limb after having his left leg amputated due to a blood clot. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he expressed shock and pain at the allegations. He argued that the computers in question were not in his possession since he moved from Rosarito, Mexico, to the Philippines in January 2025 for a fresh start. He characterized the accusations as sick lies.
The investigation is moving on multiple fronts. Philippine officials have confirmed the matter is under active review. A specialized taskforce in Cebu is handling the case. National police have secured the computer for a digital forensic examination. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla indicated that results from this analysis could be available within one week. In the United States, the FBI has stated it will support Philippine authorities and investigate any related federal violations of U.S. law.
Family dynamics have added complexity to the situation. Samantha Markle, the father’s half-sister, has defended him. She accused her brother of fabricating stories to generate money. She noted that the claims emerged days after their father cut off his funding. She also pointed out that the computers had been out of his control for two years, suggesting ample opportunity for tampering.
The Metropolitan Police have indicated they are conducting internal inquiries. They are checking whether officers from the Rasp unit were involved in passing the 2018 letter. The force has not previously investigated Markle Sr and is not doing so at this time. This internal review adds a layer of institutional scrutiny to the already public dispute.
Markle Sr has remained estranged from the Duchess since he missed her wedding to Prince Harry on health grounds. He has never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie, now seven, and Princess Lilibet, now five. The current developments keep the family’s fractured relationships and financial interests in the spotlight.
