Mass shootings across the United States over the Halloween weekend resulted in at least six deaths and dozens of injuries, according to officials. The incidents concentrated in nightlife districts and near college campuses, with the most severe violence occurring in Texas and Alabama.
Dallas recorded the highest number of fatalities during the period. Four people died and 15 others were injured in a series of shootings within the Deep Ellum neighborhood, which serves as a hub for music venues and restaurants. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux stated that investigators were determining if three separate incidents, which took place over approximately 75 minutes on Saturday night, were connected. He noted that arrests were made but did not specify the number of suspects or the charges filed. The department had increased its police presence in the area prior to the events, and no officers were hurt.
In Birmingham, Alabama, two separate shootings occurred outside Legion Field following the Magic City Classic football game on Saturday night. Mayor Randall Woodfin reported that one person was killed and eight others were wounded. Fire officials listed two of the injured in critical condition as of Sunday. Nearly 70,000 fans attended the contest, which Alabama A&M won against Alabama State with a final score of 31-28. Police Chief Michael Pickett said most spectators had left the stadium property before the first shooting, which happened near vendors on Graymont Avenue. Spokesperson De’Rell Freeman confirmed one person was detained and that multiple weapons were recovered.
Other incidents affected university towns across the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest. In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot near the University of Delaware campus late Saturday. Lieutenant Greg D’Elia said all six were transported to hospitals, though their conditions were not immediately available. Main Street in the city was closed for several hours following the event. In Bloomington, Illinois, a shooting near Illinois Wesleyan University early Sunday killed a 19-year-old woman and left another woman in critical condition. Six other individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Fayetteville, Arkansas, saw six people taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds early Sunday near the University of Arkansas. Police indicated that an altercation preceded the shooting and that no arrests had been made. The violence extended to retail locations as well. On Friday, two people were killed in separate shootings at Spirit Halloween stores in California and Michigan.
In Fairfield, California, a shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store was described by police as a targeted attack. A 31-year-old woman who died was pregnant, according to family members. Six other people were wounded in the incident. In Madison Heights, Michigan, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot at a Spirit Halloween store on Friday afternoon. A man taken into custody by officers was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being assaulted by bystanders.
