President Donald Trump and Democratic Senate challenger James Talarico held separate rallies in Lubbock on Tuesday.
The events transformed the city into a focal point for the 2026 midterm election. Trump addressed thousands of Republicans at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. Across the street, two dozen protesters held signs supporting Talarico and opposing the president. Scores of other supporters attended a Talarico rally at the Fiesta Center, where the line extended for several city blocks.
The simultaneous events underscored the competitive nature of the race in West Texas. Talarico maintains a narrow lead over Attorney General Ken Paxton in most recent polls. Democrats are gaining support due to concerns over the cost of living and data center expansion in rural areas. Winning statewide requires increased Democratic turnout in traditionally Republican areas like Lubbock.
Drew Landry, a political science professor at South Plains College, stated that Democrats are highly motivated to vote. He suggested that bringing the leader of the MAGA movement to a core Republican area is a strategy to counter that enthusiasm. Ken Adams, chairman of the Lubbock County Republican Party, described the visit as a reward for local Republicans who have maintained the party’s stronghold in the region. He compared the atmosphere to a Super Bowl, noting the high energy among attendees.
Inside the venue, the crowd chanted “USA” and booed mentions of Talarico. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows, a Lubbock native, warned that if West Texas does not vote, Travis County will determine the state’s direction. Trump spoke for more than an hour, criticizing Talarico and predicting a loss if the latter were elected. He referred to Talarico as “Talafreako” and claimed the Democrat was not Christian.
Talarico took the stage at the Fiesta Center at 8:30 p.m., shortly after Trump concluded his speech. A campaign spokesperson reported that more than 4,000 people signed up for the event. The crowd was so large that the campaign changed locations to accommodate everyone. Talarico promised to lower housing, grocery, and healthcare costs. He attributed the affordability crisis to the Trump administration’s policies and billionaire influence.
Talarico told the audience that Republicans were terrified of losing the election. He said, “They see what we see, that we’re about to win this election.” Kim Gonzalez, secretary of the Lubbock County Democratic Party, said the late-season rally by Trump indicated Republican fear. She noted that Democrats in the region are determined to take the state back.
