Barcelona and Real Madrid enter Sunday's match at Camp Nou with a perfect 106-106 record in their all-time head-to-head history. A win for either side will end a tie that has persisted since 1902, granting the victor a permanent advantage in the most watched rivalry in football.
The fixture, known as El Clasico, has evolved from a contest between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to a battle involving Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for Barcelona against Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr for Real Madrid. While the player lists have changed, the stakes for historical bragging rights remain identical.
The last time the teams separated the scores was in a 3-2 Barcelona victory at the Santiago Bernabeu on April 23, 2017. Messi scored the final goal of the match, marking his 500th for the club, after Sergio Ramos was sent off for a lunge on him. Despite the win, Barcelona did not secure the league title, losing the championship race by three points.
History also shows how tightly these matches can be decided. In a 3-3 draw at Camp Nou on March 10, 2007, a 19-year-old Messi scored the first hat-trick of his career to save Barcelona after they lost a player. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice for Real Madrid, but Messi equalized in stoppage time. Both clubs finished that season with 76 points, with Madrid winning the title on head-to-head records.
Real Madrid's 4-2 home win on April 10, 2005, featured their "Galacticos" era under president Florentino Perez. Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, and Raul scored before Michael Owen added the fourth. Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho goals were not enough to prevent Real from taking the league that year, although Barcelona eventually won the title by three points.
The most lopsided result in recent memory occurred on May 2, 2009, when Barcelona beat Real 6-2 at the Bernabeu. Thierry Henry scored twice, and Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique added goals. Barcelona dominated that season, winning the league by nine points.
The rivalry also decides cup titles. In the Copa del Rey final on April 20, 2011, Real Madrid won 1-0 in extra time after a goalless first 90 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo headed a pass from Angel Di Maria to secure the goal. Di Maria was later sent off, but the victory gave Real their first trophy under manager Jose Mourinho and their first domestic cup since 1993.
