Fourteen consecutive Central Section championships define the legacy of the Clovis West Golden Eagles girls basketball program. That streak has made winning the default expectation for any player who wears the Golden Eagles uniform. Ryleigh Schoonover is the latest standout to emerge from that sustained run of success.
Schoonover is now entering her first season with the Fresno State women’s basketball team. She joined a talented freshman class and chose to stay within the Central Valley rather than attend a school in another region. Her decision keeps her close to the community that shaped her playing style.
Her former high school coach, Craig Campbell, emphasized that the program’s culture focuses on constant contention. "We want to be good every year," Campbell said. "We're not going to win it every year, but we want to be knocking on the door every year." Schoonover helped maintain that standard during her time at Clovis West before moving on to the college level.
Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy has publicly praised Schoonover’s impact since her arrival. He identified her as the top local talent in her recruiting class. "In my opinion, Riley was the best player in the area for her class of 2026," McCarthy said. "Riley came in and proved that right away." His comments reflect the high level of performance he expects from the roster.
Schoonover has spoken about the personal significance of representing her home region in college competition. "To wear that valley 'V' on your chest, it's something different," she said. She noted that residents outside the Central Valley often do not understand the local pride attached to that identity.
The Fresno State Bulldogs are currently competing in the Pac-12 Conference and aiming for a conference championship. Schoonover credited Campbell for preparing her for the physical and mental demands of McCarthy’s system. "Everything is the standard," she said, drawing a parallel between the two programs. McCarthy agreed, noting that her background in a winning high school program sets a specific baseline for her college play.
The team plays its season opener against UC Merced in less than two weeks. Schoonover will make her college debut at the Save Mart Center during that game. Campbell believes she has only begun to show her full potential. "I think that's one of the things that's so exciting for Coach McCarthy and the staff is she's just scratching the surface on what a gifted player she could be for them," he said.
