Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is expected to be sidelined for a period measured in weeks, the club confirmed on Saturday. The 40-year-old remains hospitalized in stable condition after collapsing on the training pitch the previous day. Sport director Max Eberl stated that medical examinations are ongoing to identify the specific virus affecting Kompany, but no definitive recovery timeline has been established yet.

Eberl emphasized that the club is prioritizing the coach's health over immediate scheduling decisions. He noted that the team will not set arbitrary deadlines until the medical picture is clear. "Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We're not starting to put together any timeframes," Eberl said during a press conference. He added that understanding the nature of the illness is the first step before discussing a return to duty.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks will assume command for Sunday's Bundesliga match against Freiburg. Danks, an Englishman, led the Saturday media session in Kompany's absence. He described a brief conversation with Kompany on Friday, noting that they avoided discussing tactics to allow the former Manchester City captain to rest. "It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's OK," Danks said. He affirmed that the coaching staff would work together to maintain momentum.

The club decided against seeking a postponement for the upcoming league fixture. Eberl argued that a strong performance on the pitch would serve as the best aid for Kompany's recovery. "That would probably be one of the best things we could do to help him recover," he said. The decision follows the postponement of Bayern's second team match on Friday, which was canceled immediately after the head coach's collapse.

Defending Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich enters the game holding a one-point lead over Freiburg. The top spot is on the line, adding pressure to Danks' first full charge of the match. The absence of Kompany marks a significant disruption to the team's leadership structure during a critical stretch of the season.

Midfielder Joshua Kimmich, who has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday, will also miss the Freiburg contest. Danks confirmed Kimmich's absence on Saturday. The team will look to maintain its position at the top of the table despite the double absence from the starting lineup.

Bayern's next major fixture is a Champions League match scheduled for November 3 in Madrid against Atletico. The result in Freiburg will set the tone for the club's continental campaign as they prepare to travel to Spain next month.
