Soccer: Kylian Mbappe's 22-goal record anchors Ballon d'Or bid
The Real Madrid forward lacks a team trophy this year but cites all-time World Cup scoring records to support his case for the individual award.

Kylian Mbappe enters the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday with a strong individual record but no team silverware to his name for the 2025-26 season.
The French forward is not the favorite among bookmakers, yet he has aggressively promoted his candidacy by pointing to historic scoring numbers. The award carries no cash prize, but it increases a player's status and market value. Mbappe seeks to overcome a trophyless year with personal milestones.
His primary argument rests on his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament and set the all-time record for World Cup goals. He finished with 22 goals in 22 matches. This total places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who holds the second-best record with 21 goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16 goals. Mbappe noted last month that overtaking legends in the sport's most important tournament stands out. When asked who he would vote for, he replied: "Myself."
The former PSG forward also led the scoring charts in Europe's top club competitions. He scored 25 goals in La Liga to finish as the top scorer. He added 15 goals in the Champions League, where he also topped the scoring charts. Mbappe stated: "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it."
Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals during a turbulent season managed by Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. France placed fourth at the World Cup, losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff. Rival contenders have stronger trophy counts. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane won three trophies for Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title.
Mbappe told RFI that the award is for a player, not a team. He said individual performance and memorable moments matter most for this prize. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho supported his player. "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team," Mourinho said.
Historical trends favor candidates with team success. Every Ballon d'Or winner over the past decade lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 prize after helping PSG win their first Champions League title. Rodri won the 2023 prize after winning Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City.
One precedent exists for a winner without a major trophy. Cristiano Ronaldo won the award in 2013 after a season where Portugal failed to pass the 2012 World Cup playoffs and Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season. The result offers a slim chance for Mbappe, who has received nine nominations and finished third in 2023.
