William Contreras, the 28-year-old catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, was named the Most Valuable Player of the World Series on Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Venezuelan native helped lead his team to a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in the decisive fifth game, securing Milwaukee's championship.
During the series, Contreras batted .381 and recorded four stolen base outs. He also successfully challenged the Automated Ball-Strike system in 10 of 13 appeals. In the final game, he hit a go-ahead double that helped close out the series. Contreras became the eighth catcher in history to receive the MVP honor, following players such as Salvador Perez and Johnny Bench.
Manager Pat Murphy praised Contreras as the team's "pit bull," noting that the catcher is often critical of his own performance. Murphy stated that he told Contreras before the final game that he would be the MVP. "There was no doubt in my mind," Murphy said. "He is special."
After receiving the trophy, Contreras embraced his older brother, Willson, a first baseman for the Boston Red Sox. The two brothers are part of a small group of players who won both the World Baseball Classic and the World Series in the same year. Contreras represented Venezuela in the Classic earlier in March, where his team claimed its first title.
Other Brewers players posted strong numbers during the postseason. Cooper Pratt set a rookie record with six consecutive hits, while Jackson Chourio recorded 11 hits, the most by a player in a five-game World Series. Ace pitcher Jacob Misiorowski went 2-0, allowing just one run over 10.2 innings.
The award ceremony took place at Tropicana Field. Contreras stood with the Venezuelan flag draped over his shoulders as he accepted the trophy. He described the achievement as a historic moment for his home country, noting that it marks the first time Venezuelan players have won both major international baseball titles in a single calendar year.
