The Chicago Bears traded their 2027 and 2028 first-round draft picks to the Tennessee Titans for defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, according to a person familiar with the deal. The transaction also includes a fourth-round selection in next year's draft moving to Tennessee, while the Bears receive a fifth-round pick for 2028. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not yet been made public by the league.
Simmons, 29, recorded four sacks in seven games this season. He earned first-team All-Pro honors last year after posting a career-high 11 sacks in 15 appearances. The addition aims to strengthen a defensive line that had been described as questionable by team observers. Chicago is currently 5-2 and has won two consecutive games.
The Bears are chasing the undefeated Minnesota Vikings for the lead in the NFC North. They will play the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night. Last season, the team finished 11-6, its first division title since 2018. Head coach Ben Johnson led the club to a wild-card win over the Green Bay Packers before an overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round.
General Manager Ryan Poles and Johnson have signaled a desire to compete for the franchise's first Super Bowl title since 1985. On Wednesday, Johnson addressed the approaching Nov. 10 trade deadline. He stated that the organization is in constant dialogue regarding the team's needs for both the present and the future.
"He's turning over every stone that he possibly can to improve this football team just like he has ever since I've gotten in this building and I feel really good about our process," Johnson said. He added that the front office is focused on what the team needs to succeed.
Simmons discussed the possibility of a trade on Wednesday. He said his daily goal is to focus on where his feet are at rather than looking ahead. "I don't worry about the things I can't control," he said. He described such external factors as distractions from the moment.
