Kim Jong-un traveled to China on Saturday and officially opened a new road link between the two nations. He crossed the New Yalu River Bridge into the border city of Dandong, according to South Korea's unification ministry and China's Xinhua news agency. This infrastructure move connects Pyongyang directly to Beijing by land.
Kim met with Wang Huning, a member of the standing committee of China's Communist Party. The two leaders toured a local car factory and pledged to strengthen bilateral relations. Xinhua reported that Kim stated North Korea is ready to work with China to expand practical cooperation. The goal, according to the agency, is to deliver tangible benefits to the citizens of both countries. Wang accompanied Kim to the bridge to see him off after the meeting.
The timing of the visit aligns with the anniversary of China's first major victory in the Korean War. That victory occurred on October 25, days after Chinese troops crossed the Yalu River into North Korea in 1950. Japan's Kyodo news agency reported that traffic controls were established around the bridge and a nearby war museum. Hotel bookings in the area were also restricted. Diplomatic sources told Kyodo that these security measures were tied to the visit by a senior North Korean official.
The 3km bridge opened in mid-October. China completed the construction 12 years ago, but delays on the North Korean side prevented its opening until now. In early September, North Korea and Russia opened the first road bridge across their short border. These two new links mean Pyongyang is now connected by road to its two main backers.
This is Kim's sixth trip to China. His previous visit was in September 2025, when he attended a military parade in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Xi visited Pyongyang in June, marking his first trip there in seven years.
Relations with South Korea have deteriorated recently. Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, has issued about 10 statements criticizing Seoul since late September. South Korea's unification ministry described this frequency as unusual. She announced plans to resume loudspeaker broadcasts at the border within days.
Chinese President Xi will host the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen on November 18 and 19. This event has fueled speculation about a potential meeting between Kim and US President Donald Trump. However, Reuters reported on Friday that US and South Korean officials see little chance of such a meeting occurring this year.
