Thirty percent. That is the percentage increase in Disney+ subscribers across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa over the last 18 months. The Walt Disney Co. and U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 will launch a joint streaming service in the U.K. and Ireland in early 2027. The arrangement allows Disney+ users to watch Channel 4's linear high-definition channel and its on-demand library at no extra cost.

The partnership marks the latest content agreement between the streamer and a major European broadcaster. Disney+ has previously struck deals with ITV, Italy's RAI, Germany's ARD and ZDF, Portugal's SIC, and Spain's RTVE and Atresmedia. Executive Karl Holmes, general manager for Disney+ in the EMEA region, described the Channel 4 pact as the most ambitious deal in the company's history for the area.

Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra stated that the move aligns with the broadcaster's digital-first strategy. The goal is to direct more revenue toward distinctive British content. Dogra noted that audience habits are shifting as viewers seek content across multiple platforms. She said the agreement will expose Disney+ customers to public service programming while complementing Channel 4's owned services.

The on-demand section on Disney+ will feature a Channel 4-branded area with navigation similar to the rest of the service. Shows will be available day and date, meaning they will appear on the streamer at the same time as their broadcast release. Initial titles include the drama Maya starring Bella Ramsey, the comedy Stepping Up with Denise Welch, and the reality format Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. The library will also include hundreds of hours of scripted and unscripted content, such as Big Mood, Tip Toe, and 24 Hours in A&E.

Adam Smith, chairman of direct-to-consumer at Disney Entertainment, said local broadcaster partnerships are vital for building content libraries. He highlighted Channel 4's strong appeal to U.K. and Irish audiences. Smith said the deal pairs high-quality local programming with a complementary audience on the streaming platform.

Data from U.K. measurement firm BARB illustrates the demographic gap between the two services. Only 3 percent of Channel 4 viewership hours come from people aged 4 to 15. In contrast, 17 percent of Disney+ consumption comes from that age group. For viewers aged 16 to 34, the split is 10 percent for Channel 4 versus 39 percent for Disney+. For the 35 to 44 age group, the figures are 10 percent and 21 percent respectively. Viewers aged 45 to 54 account for 15 percent of Channel 4 hours and 12 percent of Disney+ hours. The 55-plus demographic makes up 63 percent of Channel 4 viewers and 11 percent of Disney+ users.

Holmes said the next wave of growth for the service will be driven by local content. He emphasized that Channel 4's commissioning strategy is distinctive and buzzy. He noted that the deal brings the broadcaster's most talked-about shows to Disney+ in a premium environment. He said Disney+ is growing strongly and engagement is rising due to local originals and free-to-air partner content.

Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed. Both executives indicated room for expansion. Dogra said the partnership could lead to further exchanges of content. She noted that Channel 4 already licenses Disney programming, including The Simpsons, This Is Us, and films like The Avengers. Holmes said the companies would continue to discuss how the partnership evolves.

Dogra stressed that Channel 4's owned and operated services remain the home for the vast majority of its programming. She said the new service is a way to reach potential new audiences without changing the broadcaster's core structure. Further details on launch timing and specific content availability will be released later.
